Identity Wallets are coming!

By Rob Ojevaar, Founder & CEO of Booleans

The EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) is on track to revolutionize how European citizens and businesses handle identity and trust in the digital world. Envisioned as a secure, user-controlled digital wallet for sharing verified credentials, the EUDI Wallet will play a key role in enabling seamless cross-border services, from accessing healthcare to renting a car abroad. Wallets are not all in the future, they’re already here, and Booleans can help you get ready.

Where do we stand today?

Since the adoption of the revised eIDAS 2.0 regulation, the European Commission and member states have launched a series of Large Scale Pilots (LSPs) to explore real-world implementations of the wallet across key sectors: finance, education, healthcare, and transportation.
Several consortia, including NOBID, POTENTIAL, EWC, and DC4EU are actively testing technical specifications, trust models, and user journeys. These pilots are laying the groundwork for broader adoption, with national rollouts expected to begin between 2026 and 2027.

The implementation challenge
As promising as the EUDI Wallet is, its implementation comes with considerable complexity:

Interoperability
Wallets and service providers must adhere to common European standards (e.g. Verifiable Credentials, OpenID4VC) while supporting country-specific requirements. Achieving this balance is a technical challenge.

Trust & Certification
Every wallet and relying party must meet strict security, privacy, and assurance requirements. Certification across the EU adds significant overhead, especially for multinational service providers.

Integration with Legacy IAM
One of the toughest challenges is integrating wallets with existing Identity & Access Management (IAM) systems. Many organizations still depend on traditional IdPs and directory services that are not wallet-ready.

User Experience
Trust and usability are key to adoption. The wallet must work seamlessly across platforms and languages, while keeping the user in control of their data.

Governance & Liability
Who is responsible when things go wrong? Liability, revocation, and dispute resolution are still being defined at the EU level.

Booleans’ Approach: Partners, Honesty & Excellence

At Booleans, we recognize that no organization can solve these challenges alone. That’s why we collaborate with our partners like Ver.id, who provide wallet-ready identity capabilities already connected to the largest Identity Providers (IdPs) in the market. This allows us to:

  • Simplify integration between EUDI Wallets and enterprise IAM stacks
  • Reduce time-to-market for wallet-based services
  • Offer a bridge between legacy authentication models and future-proof, verifiable credential flows

But more importantly, we aim to unburden our clients throughout this journey. Our work is rooted in our core values:
Honesty – We communicate openly about what’s possible, what’s complex, and what’s worth investing in.
Excellence – We deliver with quality, precision, and care, because identity is too important to leave to chance.

Demand is growing fast

As national wallet strategies take shape, we’re seeing rising demand across industries from public services to fintech and healthcare for robust, interoperable, and secure identity solutions. Organizations are looking to:

  • Simplify KYC and onboarding with reusable digital credentials
  • Reduce fraud through verifiable, tamper-proof identity proofing
  • Enable login-free, consent-based access to services using wallet credentials

Booleans is actively supporting this shift, providing architectural guidance, technical integration, and implementation support across the identity lifecycle.

Looking ahead

The EUDI Wallet is more than a regulatory requirement, it’s an opportunity to rethink trust and identity at scale. But success depends on collaboration, technical readiness, and a sharp focus on usability.
By working closely with partners like Ver.id and aligning with evolving EU standards, Booleans helps organizations navigate this transition with clarity, confidence, and peace of mind.
